Our firefighters are people like you. We come from all walks of life. We are your neighbours, your friends, business owners, tradespeople, managers, students, and more. Qualicum Beach firefighters are highly skilled and trained to respond to all kinds of emergencies. Our day could include structure fires, wildfires, motor vehicle incidents, medical assistance, hazmat incidents, or technical rescue calls.

OUR CULTURE

When you join the Fire Department, you join a family of likeminded individuals. For many of us, being able to help others is our biggest driving factor. We value camaraderie and strive for growth. We are proud of the work we do.

Hours

We respond to calls for service at all hours of the day. Some paid on-call firefighters can leave their jobs to assist in an emergency, while others can only respond when they are off work. Firefighters are required to attend at least 20% of all incidents each quarter and attend a weekly two hour practice session once a week.

Training

Training sessions run once a week, and additional practice nights occur as scheduled for work on specific skills. All training is provided at no cost to the firefighter.

New recruits receive additional training, on top of weekly training sessions, in order to ensure they meet the NFPA 1001 standard. This is a requirement that shows you meet the qualifications of a professional firefighter.

To keep skills sharp, members have the opportunity to attend courses as they come up. You will gain knowledge about building construction, medical assistance, fire behaviour, vehicle rescue, rope techniques, and more.

Growth

We do not expect new members to have previous firefighting skills or tickets, rather, we value a diverse background of experience. Our firefighters continuously strive for improvement and personal growth. We will offer new challenges and obstacles and give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to overcome them.
