FIRESMART ASSESSMENT
FireSmart Is a Shared Responsibility
FireSmart is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in building a wildfire-resilient British Columbia —whether you’re a homeowner, renter, or community leader, your actions make a difference. By working together and applying simple FireSmart principles at home or in the workplace, we can help dramatically decrease the possibility of remote ignition by errant sparks and embers from nearby fires.
You will find us out in the community at local events and markets, sharing the FireSmart principles and practical tips. Want to get involved? You can do your part by exploring the resources below to learn how to FireSmart your home. And if you’re not sure where to start, we offer free home assessments with recommendations to help make your home more resilient to fire.
WHY FireSmart?

British Columbia has experienced a sustained increase in extreme wildfire behaviour and fire events particularly in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) zone. The WUI is the transition between infrastructure and the natural landscape.
Although a portion of our community is in the urban environment, there is a chance that properties can be susceptible to structure-to-structure ignition or wildfires. When a fire starts, it can cast embers which may start remote fires as they travel away from their source. Embers landing nearby can ignite materials on or near your property, possibly causing severe damage or a total loss.
Is your home and property prepared for wildfire? Being FireSmart should be an all-year practice, as the principles not only help in the dry summer season but also can help in the event of a neighbouring structure fire threatening adjacent properties in the other months.
Simple steps can be taken to ensure your property and neighbourhood are as resilient as possible in the event of wildfire.
